Northern Cardinal

Northern Cardinals are common in most backyards. They are frequent visitors to backyard bird feeders. They love sunflower and safflower seeds.

Description: 

  • Males are red with a black mask and chin.

  • Females are brownish gray with reddish wings and tail. 

  • Both sexes have a large orange cone shaped bill and a large crest. 


Food:

  • Insects, seeds, fruits. Likes to forage on the ground.


Habitat:

  • Prefers dense shrubby areas.


Preferred Nest:

  • Nest in shrubs.


Backyard Birdhouse:

  • No, prefers to build its own nest in dense shrubs or thickets. 


More Facts:

  • Both Males and Females will sing. 

  • They do not migrate.
