The West Ashley Greenway is an 8-mile trail that runs through West Ashley along a former railroad corridor, now part of the City of Charleston’s park system. Stretching from Albemarle Road to Main Road, the Greenway is a popular spot for walking and biking, passing through neighborhoods, wooded areas, open fields, creeks, and tidal marsh.
This bird walk focuses on the western end of the Greenway between mile markers 7 and 8 near Main Road. This section features expansive tidal marsh alongside the trail, with wooded edges and a small forested area near the entrance creating a diverse mix of habitats in a relatively short distance.
The Greenway attracts a wide variety of bird species throughout the year, including shorebirds, wading birds, songbirds, woodpeckers, raptors, gulls, and more. During the summer months, this stretch becomes a hotspot for color, with Roseate Spoonbills and Painted Buntings among the highlights.
The West Ashley Greenway (MP 7–8) is also recognized as Charleston County eBird Hotspot #39, with over 183 species recorded.
